Meet Matt

Matt Stern is now the Councilmember-Elect for New Rochelle’s City Council District 6.

Matt brings a wealth of experience and passion to his candidacy for New Rochelle City Council. An organizer, nonprofit leader, and father, Matt has dedicated his career to advocating for justice.

Matt was raised in Ellicott City, MD and is a proud graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park. He spent several years in Baltimore as a high school English teacher and co-founder of a nonprofit that teaches students community organizing and civic leadership skills. In 2011, Matt moved to Brooklyn where he was an active community leader, serving on the executive committee of New Kings Democrats and as a budget delegate in District 39’s Participatory Budgeting Education Committee.

Since moving to New Rochelle in 2020, Matt has quickly become involved, serving as a district leader in the New Rochelle Democratic Committee and a founding board member of the Ward Acres Conservancy. After Hurricane Ida,  Matt organized with his neighbors for flood mitigation efforts. He lives in the Pinebrook neighborhood with his wife, Madeline, and their two children, and is a member of Temple Israel. In his spare time, Matt loves reading, finding new music, and exploring hobbies like gardening and woodworking.

ENDORSED BY COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER, SENATOR SHELLEY MAYER, ASSEMBLYMEMBER AMY PAULIN, WESTCHESTER-PUTNAM CENTRAL LABOR BODY, SOUTHERN WESTCHESTER ACTION PAC, MAYOR NOAM BRAMSON, THE NEW ROCHELLE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, AND MANY OF YOUR NEIGHBORS!

Priorities

On the city council, Matt will have three key priorities for New Rochelle:

  • FIX THE FLOODING: When 500-year floods occur every five years, New Rochelle has to step-up and lead with aggressive strategies to fix the floods. Matt will pursue an equitable, all-of-the-above approach to keep us dry. With new funding opportunities available at the county, state and federal levels, as well as the city's own drainage study, now is the time to tackle the flooding issue.

  • FAMILY-FRIENDLY STREETS: Everyone should feel safe walking, biking, and driving to local parks, schools, and businesses. Matt will invest in the infrastructure that builds healthy, safe, and sustainable communities.

  • PEOPLE-LED BUDGETING: Matt will bring participatory budgeting to New Rochelle, which is a democratic process in which residents decide how to spend part of the city budget. Want water fountains in Ward Acres? A community garden at Davis Elementary? Gather your neighbors and get it on the ballot!
